<p>Dier’s impending departure from Bayern Munich has sparked criticism from former Germany international Hamann, who believes the club has mishandled the situation. In his <a href="https://sport.sky.de/fussball/artikel/didi-hamann-kolumne-ueber-bayern-kim-lamine-yamal-barcelona/13359137/34090" target="_blank">column for Sky Sport of Germany</a>, Hamann expressed his frustration at Bayern’s lack of creativity in retaining the “outstanding” English defender, adding that the decision is likely to leave “a bad taste” in the mouth of Dier’s close friend and teammate, Harry Kane.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>After signing on loan from Spurs in January 2024, Dier's move was made permanent just two months into his loan stint with the Bavarians, signing a deal until the end of the ongoing 2024-25 season. The English centre-back has failed to carve out a place as the first-choice, previously under ex-coach Thomas Tuchel and now under current manager Vincent Kompany. However, Hamann believes that Dier lived up to the standards of a Bayern defender whenever he was called upon. Dier will now be leaving for Ligue 1, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/harry-kane-loses-english-mate-eric-dier-set-leave-bayern-munich-another-european-club-end-contract-nears/blt83771fdcdf4b2474#csaef29cc31579523d" target="_blank">joining Monaco on a two-year deal with the option for a third year</a>.</p>

<p>In his column, Hamann severely criticised Bayern's handling of Dier. He wrote: "Eric Dier will leave FC Bayern this summer. This surprises me greatly. I thought a contract extension with him was a mere formality. Bayern may not have been willing to give Dier a two-year contract plus an option for a further year, which is what he's now getting in Monaco.</p><p>"Perhaps Bayern should have been a bit more creative. Dier was needed in the second half of the season and rarely, if ever, attracted negative attention on the pitch. For me, that's always the best sign for a central defender at Bayern Munich. He also addresses certain issues internally. He was also a goal threat, scoring in the second leg against Milan. You can always rely on him.</p><p>"Dier is a player who holds a team together. When he's not playing, he doesn't complain. When he is, he performs. He's been outstanding during his time at Bayern. Together with [Josip] Stanisic, he's been outstanding in big games in recent weeks. This is a huge loss, especially with the Club World Cup in mind.</p><p>"This might also leave a bad taste in the mouth of his good friend Harry Kane. On the other hand, Kane is a professional; he has a contract with Bayern Munich, not with Dier."</p>
