<p>Fernandes was sent off for a high challenge on Maddison in Sunday's blockbuster Premier League clash at Old Trafford. The United captain appeared to slip as he went for the ball, but then kicked out needlessly to take out Maddison, who was left writhing in pain on the turf. To compound United's misery, Kobbie Mainoo limped off injured moments later, with Mason Mount coming on to replace him. The hosts went in at the break 1-0 down courtesy of Brennan Johnson's early opener.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>The red card was the first of Fernandes' United career, coming after 242 games for the club. It means he will miss upcoming clashes with Aston Villa, Brentford, and West Ham United.
