Henderson is set to be named Ajax captain, according to a new report from the <a href="https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/jordan-henderson-handed-liverpool-privilege-32095034" target="_blank">Daily Mirror</a>. The England international was Liverpool's captain prior to his <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/jordan-henderson-transfer-saudi-arabia-slap-in-face-lgbtq-community-steven-gerrard/bltdb90358be0b3ee62" target="_blank">controversial move to Saudi Arabia</a>, and was also made Ettifaq captain by manager Steven Gerrard. Now, in his second appearance for the Dutch club, he is set to wear the armband against Heerenveen on Sunday.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Steven Bergwijn, the former Tottenham winger, is currently Ajax's captain but he is injured, and will miss Sunday's encounter. As a result, Henderson will take the armband, but the Mirror reports that the appointment could be made permanent by coach John van 't Schip.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ajax are currently fifth in the Eredivisie, although they are 21 points behind <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/psv-usmnt-ricardo-pepi-malik-tillman-sergino-dest/blt8d6313843048ffdd" target="_blank">leaders PSV Eindhoven</a>. A fourth-placed finish would seal qualification to the Europa League qualifiers, while third-place earns a spot in the Champions League qualifiers. Only the top two automatically progress to the group stage.

After facing Heerenveen on Sunday, Ajax will play Bodo/Glimt in the Europa Conference League on Thursday. They then return to league action against NEC in a week's time.
