NYCFC hires Pascal Jansen, former Arne Slot assistant and Ferencváros manager, as head coach

New York City FC have their next head coach in Pascal Jansen.The 51-year-old Dutchman was <a href="https://www.fradi.hu/labdarugas/elso-csapat/hirek/jansent-kivasaroljak-leandro-kesziti-fel-a-fradit?ref=hudsonriverblue.com" target="_self">confirmed </a>to be bought out of his contract with Hungarian side Ferencvaros by "a group that owns one of the world's leading football clubs," with <a href="https://x.com/fabrizioromano/status/1874161296817684507?s=46" target="_self">Fabrizio Romano reporting </a>that City Football Group were behind the contract buyout and that his appointment with the MLS side is imminent.The Eastern Conference club has been without a head coach since<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/nycfc-fire-manager-nick-cushing-after-hudson-river-derby-playoff-loss-to-rivals-new-york-red-bulls/blt384ab3b30c50e0c3" target="_self"> Nick Cushing's firing in November.</a>

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Dutchman joined the Hungarian side this past summer after leading Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar from 2020-2024, where he worked under current Liverpool boss Arne Slot as an assistant before replacing him when Feyenoord secured Slot's services in 2021.While with AZ, Jansen managed the Dutch side across 162 matches, including a brilliant 2022-23 UEFA Conference League campaign in which they reached the semifinals. Across all competitions, he held an impressive record of 96-24-42 (WDL).He would be NYCFC's sixth head coach since their founding as an organization in 2013.

WHAT JANSEN SAID

Jansen's <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/may/11/pascal-jansen-az-alkmaar-manager-west-ham-europa-conference-league-semi-final" target="_self">approach is inspired by former Netherlands superstar Johan Cruyff,</a> and being born to Dutch and English parents, he has a passion for both professional leagues.“If you’re educated from the Dutch point of view you have a very offensive way of thinking. We were inspired by Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff. It’s having the ball and being creative, but also not being naive by only playing attack and forgetting what it’s like to be out of possession," he told The Guardian in 2023. "I strongly believe if you want to attack as much as we do you have to be better in defending than anybody could imagine.”

NYCFC's 2025 campaign begins in late February, and with Jansen now official in as coach, they will look to pursue transfer targets to firm up the roster. First up will be finding a replacement for midfielder James Sands, who was<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/nycfc-loans-u-s-international-james-sands-to-bundesliga-side-fc-st-pauli/blt148519ad0e01db3b" target="_self"> loaned out to Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli on Jan.</a> 1.
