<p>It has been announced, after several years of speculation, that <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/sir-david-beckham-football-icon-receive-knighthood-ex-man-utd-star-kings-birthday-honours-list/blt052f6a7d9c3682bb" target="_blank">former England captain Beckham is to be knighted</a>. His work in football and for various charitable causes around the world is being recognised.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Beckham, who was awarded an OBE in 2003 and recently celebrated his 50th birthday, has admitted he "never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour". He went on to say that it will "take a little while for the news to sink in but I’m immensely proud and it’s such an emotional moment for me to share with my family".</p>
