Defenders can be overlooked during award season but Ashley Lawrence was superb this past year and one of only a few players to star in successful teams for club and country -<a href="http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/psg-clinch-clubs-first-division-1-feminine-title-as-lyons/1pt4vnoc20ox71x6gsusi7peit"> </a><a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/psg-clinch-clubs-first-division-1-feminine-title-as-lyons/1pt4vnoc20ox71x6gsusi7peit" target="_blank">winning the league with Paris Saint-G</a><a href="http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/psg-clinch-clubs-first-division-1-feminine-title-as-lyons/1pt4vnoc20ox71x6gsusi7peit">ermain</a>&nbsp;and <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/news/canada-defeat-sweden-to-win-countrys-first-ever-olympic-gold/fcfndlgunb7j1xuh1ledgfskc" target="_blank">Olympic gold with Canada.</a> A full-back who defends as well as she attacks, she deserves all the recognition she's getting.

After some difficult spells with injuries, Lieke Martens took her game to the another level this year. She doesn't always start for Barcelona's star-studded team, which takes her down a few places, but she always makes huge contributions - scoring twice in the Champions League semi-finals <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/news/champions-league-winners-barcelona-europes-best-side-all/tsq2sd3gdyh31rnjs99nqpcvy" target="_blank">and shining in the final</a> as they won the treble.

The best player in France last season, Kadidiatou Diani's brilliance can often go unnoticed as the statistics don't do her justice. The winger's intelligent movement off the ball, excellent footwork and positivity in possession made her not only excellent to watch, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/psg-clinch-clubs-first-division-1-feminine-title-as-lyons/1pt4vnoc20ox71x6gsusi7peit" target="_blank">but helped PSG win their first-ever Division 1 Feminine title.</a>

Last season wasn't Arsenal's best, and therefore wasn't Vivianne Miedema's best, but she still scored a ton of goals and <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/news/miedema-breaks-olympics-record-after-scoring-twice-in/11ljsmhnyhde1hjowhucwdgi5" target="_blank">shattered plenty of records.</a> How she contributes in the build-up, on and off the ball, can be forgotten because of those stats, too. Watching her play is to wonder what she can't do.

Jennifer Hermoso only started 16 league games last season, which knocks her down this list a little, but she still scored 31 goals. That's incredible. Her impact goes beyond those goals too. The way she creates space for others with her intelligent movement is absolutely crucial to the way Barcelona, the best team in Europe, play.

The best player at <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/news/barcelonas-uefa-womens-champions-league-triumph-can-inspire/17ir608bafam0znmz518lkqkh" target="_blank">the second-best team in Europe last year,</a> Fran Kirby's numbers and performances have been excellent. <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/news/fran-kirby-chelsea-star-fought-back-twice-wsl-player-of-the/zpvqznge1fpn191wzwcqo1fmm" target="_blank">Add the context of her suffering with a heart condition the year before and her form is even more impressive.</a> The variety in her game makes it all the more fun, and more effective.

For those who watched Sam Kerr in the NWSL, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/news/wembley-nightmare-distant-memory-world-class-kerr-chelsea/muadpgxq96de1xlsedd7vw0bx" target="_blank">that she was doubted in her early days at Chelsea was bizarre.</a> She has been incredible this past year, scoring goal upon goal and generally improving her all-round game. She sits just above Kirby due to an excellent Olympic campaign.

Picking between second and third is like splitting hairs, but Aitana Bonmati was comfortably among the top three best players on the planet this past year. Player of the match in the Champions League final, there are seemingly no weaknesses in her game. Oh, and she's still only 23 years old.

Not only is her ability great on the eye, her end product makes her the best winger in the world.

The best player in the world over the last 12 months, by a country mile. It's not only Alexia Putellas' ability to perform in the biggest moments that put her way out on top, but her remarkable consistency in every game and her leadership. Even her bad games are better than most.
