<p><a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/tyrell-malacia-back-forgotten-man-utd-star-return-17-month-injury-4-1-loss-huddersfield-efl-trophy/bltb97fc5c7fa34dd93" target="_blank">Malacia made a return to competitive action on Tuesday when he started for the Under-21s in their EFL Trophy defeat to Huddersfield</a>. The 25-year-old was making his first appearance in 17 months after undergoing knee surgery following the Nations League final in June 2023.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Malacia had two major knee operations, forcing a prolonged spell on the sidelines. While new head coach Ruben Amorim will be keen to see how the 25-year-old fits into his system as a wing-back, United won't rush him back. Per<em> </em><a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/czd5gg59jy9o" target="_blank"><em>BBC Sport</em></a>, coaching staff are keen to ensure Malacia takes it steady after such a long spell out.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>"He has worked so hard to get back," United's Under-21 coach Travis Binnion said. "He looks strong, he looks fit and his attitude is first class.</p><p>"Hopefully he kicks on now because he deserves a bit of good fortune and we could do with him."</p>

WHAT UNITED'S UNDER-21S COACH SAID

<p>Malacia could play for the Under-21s again when they take on Altrincham in the National League Cup on November 19, providing he recovers well from Tuesday's outing.</p>
