‘Interesting’ Mason Greenwood England recall claim from former Man Utd & Three Lions star if winger seals Juventus transfer & does ‘really well’ in Italy

The 22-year-old winger has earned one senior cap for his country – with his Three Lions debut made off the bench in a Nations League clash with Iceland back in September 2020. He was <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/foden--greenwood-axed-by-england-after-breaking-covid-rules-amid-allegations-of-girls-invited-to-hotel/1sc2z78w8gq8b1fruafye8lo35" target="_blank">removed from that squad following a breach of Covid protocols</a> and has not been selected since.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Greenwood spent 19 months out of action following his arrest in January 2022 on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive and controlling behaviour. Those <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/man-utd-mason-greenwood-cleared-all-charges-attempted-rape-assault-case/blt667fec4a13dfc50d" target="_blank">charges were dropped in February 2023</a>, but United were only able to sanction a loan move in the summer transfer window of that year.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Greenwood <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/rare-mason-greenwood-interview-transfer-hint-man-utd-loanee-amazing-experience-getafe-player-of-the-month-award/bltb374416f8ecabe83" target="_blank">impressed after linking up with Getafe, scoring 10 goals</a>, and is now being linked with clubs across Europe. Former United and England striker Sheringham has told <a href="https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1911851/England-Teddy-Sheringham-Man-Utd-news-exclusive " target="_blank">Express Sport</a> when speaking on behalf of TG Casino when asked if an international recall could happen: “It'd be interesting to see if he does really well at Juventus and starts getting back into the England fold. Whether he will get picked again, that'll be a big question mark. We'll have to wait and see.”

WHAT SHERINGHAM SAID

Juve are <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/juventus-man-utd-mason-greenwood-decision-40m-transfer-bid-outcast-jadon-sancho/blt1fcb723a8e9dd5d7" target="_blank">considered to be leading the race for Greenwood</a>, but the likes of Napoli, Borussia Dortmund, Valencia and Atletico Madrid <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/mason-greenwood-transfer-priority-revealed-25m-bid-tabled-spain-man-utd-business-juventus-valencia-suitor/blt4373a8eb05efe213" target="_blank">are also in the mix</a>. Sheringham expects a sale to be sanctioned at some stage, adding on the forward’s future at club level: “I do [think it'd be best for all parties if he was sold]. With what's gone on with Mason, it would've been very hard for him to come back to United and play there. I think there would've been a bit of uproar. So for him to be playing abroad, not keeping a low profile but keeping a low profile in English football, I think it's the best idea.”

There has been talk of United triggering that clause and sanctioning another loan switch that includes an obligation to buy in 2025.
