Italy and Real Madrid legend Fabio Cannavaro reportedly in talks with two top Liga MX clubs ahead of Apertura 2025

<p>A major name in world football could soon be headed to Liga MX. Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro is reportedly considering a move to Mexico, as two top-tier clubs have approached him with the possibility of taking over as head coach ahead of the Apertura 2025 tournament. The upcoming season also coincides with the Leagues Cup, which features competition between Mexican and MLS clubs.</p><p>The report comes from j<a href="https://x.com/fabrizioromano/status/1922385701422694903?s=46&amp;t=EGOTNzKoU1yQ8Nk1JYHU5g" target="_self">ournalist Fabrizio Romano</a>, who confirmed on Tuesday that Cannavaro has held discussions with two major Mexican clubs and is open to the challenge. “The former Ballon d’Or winner has been contacted by two important clubs in Mexico over the last few days,” Romano stated. “Talks have taken place, and Cannavaro is intrigued by the idea of managing in Liga MX.”</p><p>Although the names of the clubs remain undisclosed, speculation points to Monterrey and Chivas as the most likely candidates. Both clubs are actively searching for new managers following the departures of Martín Demichelis and Gerardo Espinoza, respectively. With Domènec Torrent no longer in the picture for Chivas, and Matías Almeyda seemingly heading to the United Arab Emirates instead of Monterrey, Cannavaro’s candidacy has gained momentum.</p><p></p>

<p>While the names of the clubs involved were not disclosed in reports about the Italian coach, only three teams in Liga MX are currently without a manager: Chivas, Monterrey, and Atlético de San Luis. </p><p>Chivas and <em>Rayados</em> appear to have other candidates closer to finalizing deals, but the potential arrival of a high-profile name like Cannavaro would certainly generate buzz - especially given his illustrious playing career. As a coach, however, Cannavaro is still in the early stages of establishing himself at the top level.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Cannavaro, 51, began his coaching career in 2014 with Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande, where he had two separate stints and won both the Chinese Super League and the Chinese Super Cup. He also led Tianjin Quanjian to a league title in 2016 and briefly served as interim manager of the Chinese national team.</p><p>In Europe, Cannavaro's coaching journey included short spells at Benevento, Udinese, and most recently Dinamo Zagreb. His record across those three clubs was underwhelming, with just 12 wins, 12 draws, and 13 losses in 37 combined matches.</p><p>Despite the mixed results in recent years, Cannavaro brings global pedigree. As a player, he captained Italy to the 2006 World Cup title - the same year he won the Ballon d’Or, the last defender to receive the honor. His club career included domestic and European success with Parma, and a stint with Real Madrid, where he won two La Liga titles.</p><p>If a deal materializes, Cannavaro would add star power and international experience to Liga MX, which continues to attract high-profile coaching talent. As clubs prepare for a pivotal summer, all eyes will be on who secures the services of “Il Capitano.”</p>

Chivas, on the other hand, is in urgent need of a coach who can restore the team to prominence in Liga MX. However, they won't have official competition until the start of the Apertura 2025 and the Leagues Cup, where they debut on July 31 against the New York Red Bulls.
