Despite his contributions, which included 11 goals and nine assists in 36 Premier League appearances last season, Alvarez craved a more prominent role—one that matched the stature he held within Argentina's national team. His performance was equally commendable in the Champions League, where he scored five times in seven matches and clocked almost 3,500 minutes across all competitions.

However, despite his achievements, Alvarez felt that his career at City had reached its zenith, prompting him to seek new challenges. "I felt that I needed a change in my career," Alvarez revealed during his official unveiling at Atletico Madrid. "I needed to look for a new challenge, and I believe that this club gives me the tools to give my best. I learned a lot there [at City] and I'm grateful for the two years I've been there."The 23-year-old striker is eager to embrace the opportunity to shine in the Spanish capital and added: "I've come here to help the team and to fight for every title. I spoke to [Diego] Simeone, and he said he wanted me to come here. He said that I was going to help the team and they would enhance my strengths and help me improve on my weaknesses. My aim is to show my best form, help the team win, and take Atletico to the highest level."

WHAT ALVAREZ SAID

Despite his departure, Alvarez had nothing but <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/pep-guardiola-new-striker-signing-man-city-backup-erling-haaland-julian-alvarez-atletico-madrid-transfer/blt85aa23296b19e2bd" target="_blank">praise for his former manager, Pep Guardiola,</a> under whose guidance he achieved substantial growth. However, he is equally excited to work with Simeone, whom he regards as one of the world’s best coaches. "They [Guardiola and Simeone] are among the best coaches in the world," Alvarez remarked."I don't feel like a superhero for winning the World Cup. I still have a lot to learn and improve. I am very happy to be working with Simeone for what he means to this club and for world football."
