WHAT HAPPENED?

Klopp had spent nine years at Anfield before announcing he would be leaving in the summer midway through last season. After such a lengthy spell in the dugout, it makes sense that he would prefer to take some time away from the game. The FA are said to be interested in <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/fa-plan-bring-pep-guardiola-as-england-manager-replace-gareth-southgate/blt3720cb8d6105c7d1" target="_blank">appointing Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola</a>, and have also been linked with <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/gareth-southgate-fa-chiefs-fear-england-boss-will-call-it-day-after-euro-2024-heartbreak-target-eddie-howe-graham-potter/blte5dd330f4724b256" target="_blank">Eddie Howe and Graham Potter</a>.

THE BIGGER PICTURE 

Southgate resigns with one of the best records of any England manager. He guided the Three Lions to two successive European Championship finals, a World Cup semi-final, and a World Cup quarter-final. Whoever takes over has big shoes to fill.
