Lorenz Assignon was shown a second yellow card late in the first half when he knocked Mykhailo Mudryk to the floor inside the Burnley box. When manager Vincent Kompany complained about the decision, he was also shown a red card before a lengthy VAR review ruled that the penalty should stand.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Clarets fans vented their anger on social media at the decision to award the penalty and reduce their team to 10 men, with <a href="https://twitter.com/TheBurnleyWay/status/1774100382119030875" target="_blank">TheBurnleyWay</a> writing: "Mudryk runs across Assignon = Red card. Konpany complains = Red card. The Assignon challenge wasn't even a foul, let alone a red card and a penalty. Sending Kompany off for arguing as well was over the top. After a long wait for VAR's judgement, Cole Palmer managed to chip into the net from the spot and give Chelsea the lead. It was a huge blow for the visitors, who had enjoyed a strong start to the match and looked capable of making it to half-time with the score still level.

Assignon and Kompany will now serve suspensions after being sent off, which will be a huge blow for the Clarets in their fight against relegation. After Saturday's game, Chelsea will start preparing for next week's match against Manchester United.
