Sarina Wiegman named her 23-player squad on Thursday, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/aggie-beever-jones-hannah-hampton-england-grace-clinton-winners-losers-lionesses-sarina-wiegman-euro-2025-squad/bltd228e02f7072322f" target="_blank">following a week of shocking news that saw Mary Earps and Millie Bright withdraw from selection.</a> Earps announced her immediate international retirement and Bright is continuing an extended break of recovery after describing herself as "mentally and physically" at her "limits". As such, some of the drama of the squad announcement had been lost, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/lionesses-retirement-fran-kirby-mary-earps-england-sarina-wiegman-euro-2025-squad/bltcc2245a5263b56e6" target="_blank">with Fran Kirby also retiring this week after revealing she had been told she wouldn't be travelling to Switzerland</a>.

WHAT HAPPENED?

There were still a few spots that were undecided though, with there also questions about whether or not James would be included given she hasn't played since early April due to a hamstring issue. The Chelsea star has made the cut though, and Arsenal defender Lotte Wubben-Moy is also in after Bright's absence freed up a space in the defence. There is no room for Nikita Parris, however, with the veteran Brighton forward replaced by talented teenager Michelle Agyemang, who made a late charge for the squad after scoring on her Lionesses debut back in April.

This group is a very well-balanced mix of players with multiple tournaments on their CVs and also those that will make their tournament debuts. I am excited to see what we are capable of this summer."At the same time, I do feel for those that have just missed out. I can only name 23 but there are more players who have been so important to us on our journey to Switzerland. We would not be here without them."

WHAT WIEGMAN SAID

Other notable absentees include Missy Bo Kearns, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/england-women-player-ratings-spain-sarina-wiegman-subs-costly-lionesses-nations-league-dreams-dashed-despite-superb-alessia-russo-goal/blt3f376a23010c079b" target="_blank">who made her Lionesses debut against Spain on Tuesday</a>, and Jessica Naz, who has fallen out of favour in recent months amid a lack of form at Tottenham. Manchester United centre-back Millie Turner was ruled out of contention last month due to a fractured foot, as was Ella Morris, the Spurs full-back who suffered a brutal ACL injury on her first senior England camp in May.

While Euro 2025 begins on July 2, England's first fixture of the tournament will come on July 5 when the Lionesses take on France in a mouth-watering clash.
