<p><a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/napoli-agree-gbp25m-scott-mctominay-transfer-man-utd-manuel-ugarte-arrival-psg/bltd12cdeb1d350918f#cse6db4d747ec98b34" target="_blank">McTominay left United last summer to join Napoli</a> after he was deemed surplus to the then-manager Erik ten Hag's needs. The club could also show pure profit on their balance sheet from the £25 million ($34m) deal as the midfielder was a homegrown talent. The Scotland international went on to prove his critics wrong as he <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/scott-mctominay-serie-a-mvp-napoli-voted-league-best-player-antonio-conte-serie-a-glory/blt06e488afe2e51464" target="_blank">played a stellar role in Napoli's Scudetto-winning 2024-25 campaign</a>, while the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and missed out on a European spot for next season.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>After a dismal performance under head coach Ruben Amorim, the English giants are now reportedly <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/man-utd-every-player-transfer-list-sir-jim-ratcliffe-cost-cutting-measures-hit-first-team-finances/bltd997f24672279c44#cs9ccfcf1bbfe86ee0" target="_blank">considering putting their entire squad on the transfer list</a>. This means that the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Mainoo, Harry Maguire, Alejandro Garnacho, and Andre Onana could be offloaded in the summer to generate funds for the club to make new signings.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Fortune, however, does not want his former club to sell their key players, especially a talent like Mainoo.</p><p>He told Boyle Sports, who offer the latest <a href="https://www.boylesports.com/sports/football/competition/uefa-champions-league" target="_blank">Champions League odds</a>: "I pray to God that Kobbie Mainoo doesn’t leave, look what we saw with Scott McTominay, I’m still scratching my head over how that was allowed to happen. “A homegrown player who had a history with the club, it’s the same with Mainoo, there are links but he can’t be let go, he is a wonderful player. When he came on the scene, I was really surprised by his maturity and the way he played. He is such a talented player but level-headed and down-to-earth. That's what you want as a Manchester United player. I really hope they don't let this one slip.</p><p>"They've let McTominay go, which I thought was absolutely crazy because he can play in several positions, he’s a die-hard United fan and came through the academy ranks to get to the first team. “I hope the same mistake isn’t made with Mainoo, he has shown that he is an amazing player and young players do go through periods of poor form or injury but all that talent is there, we know what he is capable of."</p>

WHAT QUINTON FORTUNE SAID

<p>Amorim's side are on the verge of <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/man-utd-62m-matheus-cunha-release-clause-failing-workaround-wolves-talisman-set-medical/blt4a700dc0ae1f939f" target="_blank">completing the transfer of Matheus Cunha</a> from Wolves and are also keen on signing <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/man-utd-launch-move-bryan-mbeumo-brentford-hitman-matheus-cunha-agreement/bltd76236d12f4e1daa" target="_blank">Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford</a> to bolster their attack. But before they could complete further signings, the club have to let go of a host of players <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/man-utd-financial-turmoil-sir-jim-ratcliffe-sponsors-negotiations-%C2%A385m-europa-league-final/blt18d4266fa6e82e9f#csae9fd3cb7216aa12" target="_blank">due to financial constraints</a> that have cropped up after missing out on European football, following their loss in the Europa League final against Tottenham.</p>
