WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>He said in a video on Instagram: "Everyone who knows me knows that this decision was not easy for me. I feel very good physically and of course the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico would have been very appealing to me. At the same time, I am convinced that now is exactly the right time to take this step and to concentrate fully on FC Bayern Munich in the future. It was a great time that shaped me and of which I am very proud. Winning the World Cup in 2014 and the special atmosphere during the European Championships at home this year are highlights for which I am extremely grateful. It was an honour for me to be captain of our national team until 2023. I loved wearing the jersey of the German national team."</p>

WHAT NEUER SAID

<p>Neuer will go down as a true Germany icon after an influential career with the national side. He was part of the team that lifted the World Cup in 2014 and is often thought of as the original <span>sweeper-keeper. </span>Nagelsmann will now have to look for a new No.1 for his team but he does have options. Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has played back-up for many years and will hope to take over the shirt, while Hoffenheim's Oliver Baumann was also in <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/germany-euro-2024-squad-julian-nagelsmann/blt94b02e94f325cce6#csbd9232d4fe2d8cad">Nagelsmann's Euro 2024 squad</a>.</p><p></p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Neuer will continue his club career and hope to win silverware with Bayern under new boss Vincent Kompany in 2024-25 after going trophyless last season. Meanwhile, Germany coach Nagelsmann will look to build a new team after the loss of four experienced stars. Germany return to action in September with Nations League fixtures against Hungary and the Netherlands.</p>
