'I don't regret anything' - Monterrey's Sergio Canales breaks silence after controversy with manager Martin Demichelis

Sergio Canales has publicly addressed the altercation he had with Monterrey head coach Martín Demichelis - an incident that ended with the Spanish midfielder injured after breaking a glass door in the locker room.Through a video posted on social media, Canales made it clear he doesn’t feel guilty about what happened. “I’m very calm and I don’t regret anything that happened. I didn’t do anything wrong. I’ve never wanted to harm this team,” he said. The former Real Betis player missed the match against Chivas due to cuts on his left leg but insisted it all came from a moment of collective frustration. “Unfortunately, as a result of the frustration we all go through when things don’t go our way, we had an intense but constructive group talk, which has been blown out of proportion due to the accident I had,” he explained. He added, “I’ve been going through a tough time, and a lot has been said. I remained silent out of respect. Everyone knows my commitment and love for this team, and that’s why I’m making this video - to put an end to this issue.”The Spaniard could return to the pitch for the Clásico Regio against Tigres.

Rayados appear focused on calming tensions and quickly moving past the incident involving Canales and Demichelis. The team’s 3-1 win over Chivas this past weekend also helped ease pressure around the club. Demichelis is eager to have the Spanish midfielder back, especially with another edition of the Clásico Regio fast approaching. However, it’s still unclear if Canales will recover in time from the cuts he sustained to his left leg after accidentally breaking a glass door. In 13 Clausura 2025 appearances, the former Real Madrid and Real Betis standout has recorded six goals and six assists.

“Unfortunately, it got leaked. Maybe if we had been lucky and Sergio had hit a wooden door instead of a glass one, no one would’ve found out and it would’ve remained a normal situation,” said Demichelis. “I need Sergio to get better this week because we need him - he’s a game-changer, he’s an extremely important player, and Monterrey needs him.”

WHAT MARTÍN DEMICHELIS SAID

It's a big week ahead for Rayados, as they visit Tigres this weekend for Matchday 15 of the Clausura 2025. Demichelis' side currently sits in eighth place with 22 points, while Guido Pizarro’s Tigres are in sixth with 26 points. Monterrey comes into the match riding a positive streak - four matches unbeaten against their city rivals, with two wins and two draws in their most recent encounters.
