The Magpies were level on points with Aston Villa and one point ahead of Nottingham Forest, and only needed to match both their rivals' results to confirm their spot.</p>

<p>Despite losing 1-0 to Everton at St. James' Stadium, Newcastle have officially confirmed their spot in next season's Champions League. The Magpies got a lucky escape as Aston Villa lost to Manchester United in controversial circumstances, while Nottingham Forest continued their slump with a 1-0 loss to Chelsea. Eddie Howe's side have finished the season level on points with Aston Villa (66), with their superior goal difference earning them the all-important fifth spot.</p>
