'Not a miracle' - Landon Donovan takes aim at Wrexham as former USMNT star warns Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney of 'big risk' in Championship

<p>Wrexham are preparing for a season in the Championship after three successive promotions from non-league. The club have often been cited as an example of a fairytale, but USMNT legend Landon Donovan has his qualms with that narrative.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Wrexham have consistently spent heavily in order to rise up the Football League, and Donovan has claimed that they now face a significant challenge as they attempt to thrive in the Championship. <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/wrexham-offered-hope-premier-league-star-strengthen-squad-promotion-championship/blt5e744b1c6275defe" target="_blank">The club had been linked with a swoop to sign Fulham's Tom Cairney in a deal that would have seen him earn £50,000-per-week</a>. </p>

<p>Donovan said on the Unfiltered Soccer podcast: &nbsp;“If you watch the show, you think it’s some miracle, but it’s not a miracle, it’s an amazing story, but they have also spent at the top of every one of the leagues they’ve been in.</p><p>“The question now is whether they can do it in the Championship. My first thought was no, but I did see a report last week that they were willing to offer a player £50,000 a week.</p><p>“They clearly have the money to do it, but are they going to take the risk? It’s a big risk now, and you could lose £30m or £40m and not get promoted. It’s going to be interesting to watch.”</p>

<p>Wrexham are likely to embark on a spending spree this summer as they aim to build a squad capable of competing in the Championship.</p>
