<p>Mathias Pogba was <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/paul-pogba-s-brother-mathias-charged-and-detained-over/blta5e592235cbadcb8">arrested and charged</a>&nbsp;over an £11m ($14m) extortion plot against the ex-Juventus star in late 2022. Now, a Paris court has handed Pogba's brother a three-year prison term, with two years suspended. However, the 34-year-old will serve the remaining one-year sentence with an electronic bracelet, rather than in jail.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Pogba, 31, previously told police that a group of childhood friends, including his older brother Mathias, had <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/brother-juventus-star-pogba-released-prison-alleged-11m-extortion-attempt/blt6387665066ce5fa0" target="_blank">requested money for "protection services"</a> - stretching back 13 years. <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/paul-pogba-contemplated-retirement-alleged-extortion-plot-juventus-france-star-admits-money-break-up-family-create-war/blt131a5710797ef21f" target="_blank">Pogba himself admitted he contemplated retirement</a> in 2023 during this extortion plot but now he may be able to get some closure following this verdict.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>The Frenchman will be able to return to football in March 2025 after his <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/explained-why-paul-pogba-doping-ban-reduced-cas-confirm-four-year-suspension-juventus-ex-man-utd-midfielder-cut-18-months/bltde5a6a37cc2133af" target="_blank">four-year doping ban was reduced to 18 months</a> earlier this year. He is currently a free agent after he and Juventus mutually agreed to<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/paul-pogba-juventus-over-french-midfielder-free-agent-contract-termination-heads-miami-train-next-move/blt236ed8ce0c70635c" target="_blank"> terminate his contract there</a>.</p>
