<p>City suffered a<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/man-city-player-ratings-vs-real-madrid-josko-gvardiol-abdukodir-khusanov/blt533a780512703522" target="_blank"> humiliating 6-3 loss</a> on aggregate against the Champions League holders and Los Blancos fans inside the stadium chose to mock Guardiola following Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick, which helped seal a 3-1 win on the night. <a href="https://www.football-espana.net/2025/02/20/real-madrid-fans-homophobic-chants-guardiola" target="_self">Reports in Spain</a> suggest one of the chants directed at the City boss was homophobic. </p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>The home crowd inside the Santiago Bernabeu could be heard chanting: "Ay, Guardiola, how thin you look. First it was the drugs. Today you can be seen around Chueca." In Madrid, Chueca is a district with a reputation for being the centre of gay culture in the city. The reference to Guardiola being thin has been linked to the HIV/AIDS crisis which affected the homosexual population during the 1980s and 90s.</p><p>Chants of "Guardiola stay" could also be heard throughout the night as the La Liga champions breezed through to the last-16 of the competition.</p>

WHAT WAS SAID?

<p>Madrid fans' decision to target Guardiola with homophobic chanting comes just over a month after it was revealed that the Spaniard has split from his wife, Cristina Serra, after three decades together. The former couple, who have three children together, had been living apart for several years before Guardiola decided to extend his contract at City until 2027. </p>

<p>Neither City nor Madrid have commented on the incident yet but it is another dent in Spain's efforts to tackle abuse in football. Guardiola, meanwhile, will look to put the incident behind him as he prepares his side for a huge Premier League clash with Liverpool at the Etihad on Sunday. </p>
