'Play in the Championship for years!' - Erling Haaland warned he 'can't go anywhere if Man City are relegated' after committing next decade to Premier League champions

<p>The prolific Norwegian striker has <a href="https://www.mancity.com/news/mens/erling-haaland-10-year-manchester-city-contract-63872694" target="_blank">penned a new ten-year contract</a> at the Etihad Stadium, taking him through to 2034. Record-setting terms have been put in place, with Haaland committing to the reigning Premier League champions on a long-term basis.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Haaland has <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/how-many-goals-has-erling-haaland-scored-during-his-career-man-city-superstar-s-crazy-stats-in-full/blt6b0b2af33bfbcb43" target="_blank">hit 111 goals for City through 126 appearances</a>, helping them to domestic trophies and a Champions League crown. Pep Guardiola’s side do, however, have an <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/man-city-warned-historic-100-point-deduction-115-charge-ffp-case-finance-expert-premier-league-champions-heading-out-division/bltb0fe81d23142cee4" target="_blank">115-charge Financial Fair Play case hanging over them</a>, with any punishments there yet to be determined.</p>

<p>It has been suggested that City would be <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/man-city-catastrophic-ban-all-competitions-guilty-ffp-breaches-english-football-thrown-into-chaos/blt3bd75759a2b6683a" target="_blank">dumped out of the English top-flight, or hit with a points penalty</a> that leads to relegation, and <a href="https://x.com/TopGunnerAli/status/1880163552817988071" target="_blank">@TopGunnerAli</a> has responded to the Haaland contract news by saying: "He’ll play in the championship for 9 years."</p><p>On a similar theme, <a href="https://x.com/AFCMinded/status/1880167695704007124" target="_blank">@AFCMinded</a> said: "9 year deal is insane. What type of wage and bonus' will be be on, because he isn't getting a payrise now for 9 years! From City POV it's great because he can't go anywhere when they get relegated."</p><p><a href="https://x.com/thisistolu/status/1880164062920864031" target="_blank">@thisistolu</a> went on to say of a <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/out-league-season-or-two-man-city-brave-call-premier-league-expulsion-punishment-115-charge-ffp-case/blt8bb0e276e999bac1" target="_blank">potential stint in the second tier</a>: "2034? By the time his contract ends, I’ll have grandkids, and they’ll still be watching him pad his stats against Burnley!"</p>

<p>Others have been quick to air their surprise, given the FFP uncertainty in Manchester, with <a href="https://x.com/UTDgeezer/status/1880163864932966705" target="_blank">@UTDgeezer</a> saying: "What does this mean about the charges then? He must be aware of something we’re not . That’s your life and career dedicated to this tiny Yoyo club."</p><p><a href="https://x.com/thekingadjor/status/1880164007010877595" target="_blank">@thekingadjor</a> said: "I’m pretty sure they’re going to get a transfer ban soon. The signings they’re making and now this for Haaland."</p><p>Taking things in a slightly different direction, <a href="https://x.com/ibrahimkuso1982/status/1880165134322348201" target="_blank">@ibrahimkuso1982</a> said of Haaland now having Premier League history in his sights: "That Alan Shearer record is already in shreds because he will break it and create a new one for other forwards to emulate."</p>
