The Parisians <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/psg-bruno-guimaraes-target-january-newcastle/blt4bf504fd38fe5ea8" target="_blank">have reportedly made Guimaraes their top target</a> for January, and hope to seize a key player from Eddie Howe's side. It has been suggested that Guimaraes has a £100m ($127m) release clause in his contract. What once appeared an unlikely move this winter could become reality, with Newcastle's financial losses leaving them open to selling key players, according to <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/newcastle-united-could-sell-star-players-after-posting-73m-loss-dkscngm7x" target="_blank">The Times</a>.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Magpies' CEO admitted that the club could be forced to sell big names in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations: "On any player, at any time, it depends on circumstances. It’s difficult to say specifically on certain players, but I can say that, if we’re going to get to where we want to get to, at times it is necessary to trade your players. Whether that is because of the contract length of the player in question, the offer is too good to refuse, you need to reload in certain areas… all of this could make sense to trade that player. It is counterintuitive and part of the system of PSR that there is an incentive to trade your players if you want to reinvest, by the nature of the boundaries."

WHAT DARREN EALES SAID

The Magpies have struggled this campaign, going out of Europe altogether after dropping points in the final matches of their Champions League group stage slate. Guimaraes has been vital to Howe's side despite these failings, but after the Magpies <a href="https://www.nufc.co.uk/news/latest-news/newcastle-united-limited-announces-financial-results-for-year-ended-30-june-2023/?klml" target="_blank">posted</a> damning losses of £73.4 million ($93.6m) this recent tax year, the club could be forced into a sale. PSG, meanwhile, are top of Ligue 1, but could certainly use a midfield boost to compete in the later rounds of the Champions League.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Parisians' focus now turns to Ligue 1 action, where they will face off against Lens on Sunday evening. Newcastle, meanwhile, host Manchester City in the Premier League a day earlier.
