<p>Los Blancos made two key signings in the attack this summer as they brought in Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain and Endrick from Palmeiras. The club, however, did not make any new additions to their backline. They had set their eyes on young French defender Leny Yoro, but the <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/leny-yoro-man-utd-injured-defender-return-training-pitch-surgery/bltc984647cddb76407" target="_blank">centre-back chose to join Manchester United</a>. </p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Carlo Ancelotti's side have already conceded 29 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign and their defensive woes further worsened after Eder Militao joined David Alaba in the medical room last month. While the Brazilian <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/real-madrid-stars-eder-militao-and-rodrygo-both-forced-off-in-tears-against-osasuna-as-defender-suffers-potential-repeat-of-nightmare-acl-injury/blt3dfbfe41fddfb822" target="_blank">will remain out of action for the remainder of the season</a> after tearing his ACL, Alaba is not expected to return before the end of January.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Per <a href="https://www.relevo.com/futbol/mercado-fichajes/madrid-dibuja-retrato-robot-central-20241228005421-nt.html" target="_blank"><em>Relevo</em></a>, the Spanish champions have <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-us/lists/four-centre-backs-real-madrid-transfer-shortlist-los-blancos-look-to-address-threadbare-defence/blt0ce2c12620159534" target="_blank">prepared a shortlist of defenders</a> and Tottenham's Micky van de Ven has emerged as a priority target for the club. The 23-year-old Dutch defender, who operates on the left side of the backline, will perfectly fit into the squad and is being seen as a like-for-like replacement of Militao. Among the other targets are Manchester City and Croatia star Josko Gvardiol and RB Leipzig sensation Castello Lukeba.</p>
