Revealed: The numbers from a record-breaking summer transfer window as men's and women's recruitment reaches new heights

<p>Teams across the world have been strengthening their squads with comings and goings over the summer window, with more than 12,000 deals being orchestrated in men's and women's football, a record high. There were around 11,000 international transfers in the men's game, while over 1,125 - a 31.8 per cent increase on last year - players were traded in the women's game.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>It was also the second-highest spending window in history, with men's teams spending a whopping £5 billion (6.46bn) in total. Women's teams invested a collective £5 million ($6.8m), which is more than twice the sum spent in the same period last year.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Julian Alvarez's <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/atletico-madrid-confirm-julian-alvarez-transfer-bizarre-bizarre-post-after-landing-man-city-striker/blt5a0da00a9400d87a" target="_blank">£82 million ($107m) transfer from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid</a> was the most expensive summer move this year, followed by <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/tottenham-complete-club-record-signing-dominic-solanke-from-bournemouth/blt1b47b3fe5bd2cb4a" target="_blank">Dominic Solanke's £65m ($83m) switch to Tottenham from Bournemouth</a>.</p><p>Meanwhile, Liverpool Women splashed out to sign Canada's Olivia Smith from Sporting CP, while they sold Missy Bo Kearns to Aston Villa. Furthermore, Arsenal paid a large fee to bring Daphne van Domselaar in from Villa.</p>
