U.S. President Donald Trump suggests opportunity for Russia to play at 2026 World Cup 'could be a good incentive' to end war in Ukraine

<p>Speaking at a <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cpdzd2pqgvwo" target="_blank">press conference </a>alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Trump told reporters that he "didn't know" Russia are currently banned from participating in FIFA and UEFA competitions, and he pondered whether inclusion in these tournaments could help persuade the Eastern European country to end their controversial war on their neighbours.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Appearing alongside Infantino, Trump was told by the FIFA president: "They [Russia] are banned for the time being from playing but we hope that something happens and peace will happen so that Russia can be readmitted." The U.S. President then said peace was "possible", before adding: "That could be a good incentive, right? We want to get them to stop. We want them to stop. Five thousand young people a week are being killed - it's not even believable."</p><br>

WHAT TRUMP SAID

<p>The President has consistently sympathised with Russia's stance over the Ukraine conflict since returning to power, to the dismay of other world leaders. However, Trump said Infantino is "the boss" when it comes to a decision on whether Russia will be allowed to play at the next World Cup, which will be held in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>The Russian national team hasn't even been permitted to participate in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, and given qualifying campaigns are well underway across the globe, it's almost guaranteed that the 2018 World Cup hosts will not be granted a spot. A total of 48 countries will compete at the expanded tournament including the three host nations.</p>
