It had been suggested that Wiegman could step down from her post after the 2025 European Championship, but she has now committed to a new deal. The 54-year-old will oversee England's qualification campaign for the 2027 World Cup, and will also be on the touchline if they make it to the tournament, which gives her the chance to avenge last year's painful final defeat to Spain. WHAT HAPPENED?

"I am so happy to have the chance to lead England through to 2027 after an incredible two and a half years," Wiegman said after confirming her contract renewal. "Looking forward, we have unfinished business and I know we are capable of even more, although nothing will come easy. Our game is becoming so competitive at the top level. I relish that opportunity and can’t wait to start the EURO qualifiers, followed by the World Cup. I would like to thank Mark Bullingham, Debbie Hewitt and the FA Board for their support. I also must mention Arjan Veurink, I am delighted he has also extended his stay. It is a fantastic job working with these amazing players and alongside great colleagues. And, of course, it is very special to be able to play a part in giving our fans such wonderful moments."

WHAT WIEGMAN SAID

Wiegman, who picked up <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/FIFA-the-best-2023-womens-coach-emma-hayes-jonatan-giraldez-sarina-wiegman/bltc2ad71f5bf786d1c" target="_blank">the FIFA Best women's coach award</a> in London on Monday night, has enjoyed great success in her first two years in charge of the Lionesses. She was the mastermind behind England's run to glory at Euro 2022, which marked the nation's first piece of silverware since 1966, and followed up that historic achievement by guiding the team to the World Cup final last summer. The Dutch coach has even been touted as a possible successor for Gareth Southgate with the men's side, but she has now ended all speculation over her future by committing to fresh terms with the Lionesses.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wiegman boasts a staggering 75.56 win percentage as Lionesses boss, having won 34 of her 45 games so far. England are due to return to action in February with two games overseas pencilled in, but the opposing teams have not yet been confirmed. Euro 2025 qualifying will then kick off in April, with the Lionesses already being tipped to defend their crown at the tournament in Switzerland.
