In a <a href="https://washingtonspirit.com/blog/2024/09/05/washington-spirit-welcomes-icon-earvin-magic-johnson-as-newest-member-of-investor-group/" target="_blank">statement released Thursday</a>, Johnson expressed his excitement to take on a stake in the club - his second investment in a women's sports team: “I’m excited to join the Washington Spirit’s investor group at such a pivotal time in the club’s history,” said Johnson. “Partnering with a visionary like Michele Kang and her team to advance the growth of the Washington Spirit and the NWSL is an incredible opportunity. I’m excited to join the team and play my part to help elevate this organization.”

The forward will be crucial in the Spirit's NWSL title hopes in the coming weeks. With the victory, Washington sit second in the NWSL standings, trailing a surging Orlando Pride by three points in second place.
