Cristiano Ronaldo's diving cited in Scottish pensioner trial

A Scottish pensioner has been cleared of assault after his alleged victim produced a dive "Cristiano Ronaldo would have been proud of".

Douglas Eglan was taken to court by Frank Cation, who claimed that the 82-year-old had spat on him and pushed him to the ground.

The row began over a set of garden shears which was left on a fence between the neighbours' properties, leading to a confrontation where 67-year-old Cation ended up on the ground.

Eglan denied the claims, stating that he had raised his arm to defend himself and had not pushed the younger man.

Following a look back at CCTV of the incident, Dundee sheriff John Rafferty said that Cation went down with a “dive that would earn a Premiership footballer a yellow card”.

Court prosecutor John Adams continued the dive analogy, claiming that "Cristiano Ronaldo would have been proud of it".

During Euro 2016, Ronaldo's also diving made the headlines when Iceland coach Lars Lagerback slammed the Real Madrid star.

“Portugal have one of the best players in the world in Ronaldo but he’s also an excellent actor," Lagerback told reporters.

“In the final of the Champions League against Atletico [Madrid], we saw another performance from someone who could be in Hollywood."

Despite his alleged dive during the altercation, pensioner Cation did not win either a free-kick nor the case for his theatrics, as sheriff Rafferty ruled in Eglan's favour.
