What is the New Year's Eve Ball Drop?

The ball drop in Times Square has a rich history behind it. For 120 years, Times Square has been the center of worldwide attention on New Year’s Eve, ever since the owners of One Times Square began in 1904 to conduct rooftop celebrations to greet the New Year. The first ball-lowering celebration occurred in 1907, and this tradition is now a universal symbol of welcoming the New Year.

Every New Year's Eve, a crowd of thousands gather in New York City to see the iconic ball drop from One Times Square. As the clock nears 12:00 a.m., a spectacular ball glide descends down a pole, and both on-site participants and millions watching remotely begin a countdown from 60.

As the clock hits the midnight mark, jubilation erupts with cheers, frequently accompanied by the exchange of ceremonial hugs and kisses among the revelers.
