Liverpool without Thiago against Tottenham due to suspected positive Covid-19 test

Thiago Alcantara has returned a suspected positive test for coronavirus at Liverpool, meaning that he will not be involved in a Premier League meeting with Tottenham on Sunday.

The Reds faced a similar situation in their last fixture against Newcastle, when Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Curtis Jones were all ruled out of contention.

The rest of Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad, and staff, have posted negative tests, with the Merseyside outfit able to steer clear of the coronavirus outbreaks that have hit a number of top-flight rivals hard.

What has been said?

A statement on Liverpool's official website reads: "Thiago Alcantara will miss this afternoon’s Premier League fixture with Tottenham Hotspur after registering a suspected positive test for Covid-19.

"The midfielder is now isolating and will play no part in the encounter in London.

"In addition, Jordan Henderson is also absent because of illness. The captain has registered a negative test for Covid-19, but has been withdrawn from selection due to feeling unwell.

"All of the Reds’ first-team squad and staff have been tested for Covid-19 on Saturday as well as this morning, with no further positive cases detected, which includes Henderson."

What games do Liverpool have coming up?

The Reds have a busy schedule over the festive period. After taking in a trip to Tottenham, Klopp's side are due to host Leicester in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

On Boxing Day they take on Leeds at Anfield, before visits to Leicester (December 28) and Chelsea (January 2).

It is highly likely that more positive tests will be returned in the coming days, with the Premier League braced for further postponements after a string of call-offs recently.
