The 2016-17 Greek Cup final was marred by clashes between fans of PAOK and AEK Athens as well as the police as violence engulfed the stands at the Athens Olympic Stadium.

After AEK fans lit fires around the stadium, the police used tear gas to attempt to defuse the situation. PAOK supporters then got involved in the disturbance, leading to fans of both teams throwing molotov cocktails, chairs, and fighting with each other.

Seats were burned at the stadium, with chemical toilets also set on fire, while kick-off was delayed amid fears that the game would be postponed to another day entirely.
A number of fans were injured in the violence, with some being airlifted to hospital as the police attempted to calm both sets of supporters. In addition, the director of the Thessaly Ambulance services, Vasiliki Avgeri, told Greek radio station Sport24 that one fan was stabbed during the violence with dozens reported injured.

AEK are the third most successful team in the competition, having lifted the Greek Cup on 15 different occasions. PAOK have been to the final 17 different times, but have a poor record at that stage, winning just four times.

Despite the chaos, the match was played, with Pedro Henrique scoring an 81st minute winner for PAOK, who took a 2-1 victory after Diego Biseswar's opener for the home side in the 24th minute had been canceled out by Lazaros Christodoulopoulos three minutes later.
