'Modric winning it will be motivation' - Allegri expects determined Ronaldo following Ballon d'Or snub

Massimiliano Allegri says he expects Cristiano Ronaldo to be motivated by Luka Modric's Ballon d'Or triumph.

The Croatian star was recognized with the prestigious award on Monday, ending an 11-year dominant period for Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Modric is the first player since Kaka, who claimed the trophy in 2007, to beat the Portuguese and Argentine to the award, with each of the duo winning five apiece during their run.

After finishing second in this year's voting, Ronaldo will be highly motivated, Allegri says, as the manager expects his forward to reach an even higher level.

"It's too bad, Ronaldo certainly deserved it with Real," Allegri said at the Gazzetta Sports Awards.

"Modric winning it will be a motivation, he'll want to do better and win his sixth ballon d'or with Juventus next year.

"CR7 is a model to all footballers. Even with all his success and at 33 years old he still focuses on each detail. His talents alone don't account for him being on his level.

"He is a likable guy and he has joined into the group well, and raised our level of professionalism, which is always a part of Juventus."

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star is already off to a flying start in Italy, having had the best opening run with the Serie A giants in 60 years.

Ronaldo and Juventus currently sit atop Serie A with the Portuguese providing 10 goals and five assists from his first 14 matches in the Italian league.

He's added an additional goal in Champions League play as Juventus currently have a two-point lead atop their group and a spot in the knockout round already sealed up.

With an eight-point lead on second-place Napoli in league play, Juventus are set to face third-place Inter this weekend with an 11-point gap currently separating the two.

"It will be a fantastic match," Allegri said. "We'll see in May if this is a season-defining match, we hope we are able to win something big.

"The derby d'Italia is a very difficult match, five out of five on the scale."

Juventus has already locked up top spot in Champions League Group H ahead of Manchester United and will round out their group campaign against Young Boys next Wednesday.
