Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester City will retain the Premier League title this season.
The reigning champions are among a host of English football’s big hitters looking to make major moves in the transfer window this season as they bid to retain their crown.
But Ferdinand insists they’ll have to overcome some major competition, including his former club on the other side of Manchester, during a season that could be defined by the moves that will take place ahead of the big kick-off.
“I think Man City are always in the market for players,” said the six-time Premier League winner, speaking courtesy of global financial service provider, Sokin.
Getty Images“The big clubs will all be making moves, everyone will make moves – 100% but in terms of big transfers I see Man Utd... maybe one or two if they can get the right names,” he added.
“I think Chelsea, after doing what they have done in the Champions League, that will give the owners the right impetus to go again, which is exciting for the league.
“Liverpool have to go again and I’ll be really interested to see what they have done.I think they have already agreed with Kundi from RB Leipzig, but I see more players going in there to freshen that side up after losing Gini Wijnaldum.”
The summer transfer race is underway in Europe with a whole host of world football’s biggest stars featuring in daily rumour mills.
Erling Haaland, Eduardo Camavinga, Renato Sanches and even Antoine Griezmann have been linked with a move to England’s top-flight, but there’s one centre-forward in particular that Rio would like to see grace the Premier League.
“[Robert] Lewandowski, if there was ever an opportunity for an English club to bring him to England, I don’t think any of the top clubs would skip that opportunity. He guarantees you goals,” Rio admits.
“With him, you know that you are going to get goals, it’s just about the rest of the team doing their job.”
Teams across the country will hope that with a key addition here and there, doing their jobs will be enough to bring home the Premier League title this coming season in what promises to be a thrilling title race.
Getty ImagesFerdinand can’t see past Pep Guardiola’s Man City, however he does believe they’ll face stiffer opposition this time round.
“Chelsea are going to be a big threat. I think just the manager alone and the confidence of winning the Champions League, and what that means to this team is huge and if they invest in the right areas,” he says.
“I think Liverpool will come back into the fray and Man Utd depend on what the transfer window will have a say as well. If I was going to stick my neck out and say someone, I would probably say Man City again, for them to retain it.
